Can Driveways Be Cleaned?

Driveways collect moss, algae, oil stains, and general grime over time. Most surfaces can be restored to a much better condition with the right approach. Here is what works on each type.

Yes, driveways can be cleaned, and in most cases a driveway that looks tired, stained, or green with algae can be restored to a significantly better condition without requiring any resurfacing. The right cleaning method depends on the driveway material and the type of contamination involved. Some jobs can be done effectively by a homeowner with a pressure washer; others benefit from professional cleaning, particularly for large areas or stubborn staining.

This guide covers how to clean the most common driveway surfaces, the best approaches for different types of staining, and what to watch out for when cleaning each material.

Block Paving Driveways

Block paving is one of the most commonly cleaned driveway types and responds well to pressure washing. Over time, moss, algae, and general soiling build up on the surface and in the joints between the blocks, giving a dark, dirty appearance that makes the whole driveway look neglected.

Pressure washing

A pressure washer is the most effective tool for cleaning block paving. The high-pressure water removes surface algae, moss, and ingrained dirt from the block faces and from the joints. A rotary head attachment, sometimes called a patio cleaner head, gives a more even result than a standard lance and reduces the risk of blasting the jointing sand out from between the blocks.

After pressure washing, the joints will typically have lost some or all of their kiln-dried sand, which needs to be replaced to restabilise the blocks and prevent further weed growth. Brush new jointing sand into the dry joints before the surface is next wetted.

Chemical treatments

For heavy moss and algae growth, applying a patio and driveway cleaner or a dedicated algae treatment before pressure washing improves the results. These are available from garden centres and DIY stores. Apply the product according to the manufacturer's instructions, allow it to dwell for the recommended time, then pressure wash. Biocidal treatments that kill moss and algae at the root level rather than just washing away the visible growth provide longer-lasting results.

Sealing after cleaning

Once clean, block paving can be sealed to protect the surface, inhibit future weed growth, and make subsequent cleaning easier. Block paving sealers are available in wet look, natural finish, and anti-weed formulations. Sealing is optional but extends the period between cleans meaningfully.

Tarmac Driveways

Tarmac can be cleaned effectively with a pressure washer, though lower pressure than is used on block paving is advisable. Very high pressure on older or softer tarmac can dislodge the surface aggregate and cause damage.

Pressure washing

A medium-pressure wash removes general soiling, algae, and moss from a tarmac surface. Keeping the lance at a slight angle and moving steadily across the surface gives a clean result without concentrating pressure on any one spot.

Oil stains

Oil stains on tarmac are the most challenging aspect of cleaning this surface type. Fresh oil spills should be covered with an absorbent material such as cat litter or sand as quickly as possible to soak up as much oil as before it penetrates the surface. Older, set-in oil stains can be treated with a degreaser product specifically designed for tarmac surfaces. These are applied, worked in with a stiff brush, left to dwell, and then washed off. Multiple applications may be needed for heavy staining. Complete removal of old oil stains from tarmac is not always possible.

Weed killer

Weeds growing through cracks or at the edges of a tarmac driveway can be treated with a path weed killer before or after washing. Systemic weed killers that kill the root are more effective than surface contact products for persistent weeds.

Concrete Driveways

Concrete driveways are durable and generally clean well with a pressure washer. The hard surface tolerates higher pressure than tarmac. General soiling, algae, and moss respond well to standard pressure washing.

Algae and moss

For heavy biological growth on concrete, a fungicidal wash applied before pressure washing improves results and helps prevent rapid regrowth. Concrete in shaded or damp areas tends to develop algae quickly, so treatments that address the underlying biology rather than just the surface appearance give longer-lasting improvement.

Oil and fuel stains

Oil stains on concrete are more receptive to treatment than those on tarmac. Concrete degreasers are available specifically for this purpose. For fresh spills, absorb as much as possible first, then apply the degreaser, scrub with a stiff brush, and wash off. Old, set-in stains may require multiple treatments but can often be significantly reduced on concrete.

Rust stains

Rust stains from metal furniture, garden tools, or gate posts are a common issue on concrete. Oxalic acid-based rust removers are effective on concrete and are available from builders merchants. Apply carefully following the product instructions and rinse thoroughly.

Always test any chemical cleaning product on a small, inconspicuous area before applying it to the whole driveway. Some products can affect the colour or finish of certain driveway materials, and it is better to discover this on a small test patch than on the full surface.

Resin Bound Driveways

Resin bound driveways are relatively easy to clean and maintain their appearance well with straightforward regular maintenance. The smooth surface does not harbour weeds or allow heavy biological growth in the way that jointed surfaces can.

Pressure washing

A standard garden pressure washer at moderate pressure is all that is typically needed to clean a resin bound surface. The aim is to wash away surface dirt, leaf debris, and any light algae without dislodging the aggregate from the resin. Avoid very high pressure or a concentrated lance position, which can damage the surface bond over time.

Leaf blowing and brushing

Regular removal of leaves and debris with a leaf blower or soft brush keeps the surface clean between washes and prevents organic material from decomposing on the surface and causing staining or feeding algae growth.

Oil stains

Oil stains on resin are best addressed quickly. A mild degreaser applied gently with a soft brush, followed by rinsing, is the recommended approach. Harsh solvents should be avoided as they can damage the resin.

Gravel Driveways

Gravel driveways do not benefit from pressure washing in the same way as hard surfaces, since the loose material would be displaced. Keeping a gravel driveway clean is primarily a matter of regular raking to redistribute the gravel, removing weeds as they appear, and applying a weed suppressant membrane underneath if weeds are a persistent problem.

A weed control treatment applied to the surface before weeds establish can reduce the maintenance burden, though established weed growth in gravel typically needs manual removal or a direct-application herbicide.

Professional Driveway Cleaning

For large driveways, heavily stained surfaces, or homeowners who do not own a pressure washer, professional driveway cleaning services are widely available and typically affordable. A professional cleaner with a commercial pressure washer and appropriate chemical treatments will generally achieve better results more quickly than a domestic DIY clean, particularly for block paving or concrete driveways with heavy biological growth.

Professional cleaning often includes a post-treatment biocidal application that slows the return of algae and moss, extending the time before the next clean is needed.

Summary

Driveways of all common types can be cleaned effectively, and the difference between a freshly cleaned driveway and a neglected one is considerable. Pressure washing addresses most general soiling, algae, and moss on hard surfaces, with chemical treatments improving results for heavy growth or stubborn staining. Oil stains require dedicated degreaser products and prompt treatment. Resin and block paving benefit from regular light maintenance to reduce the frequency of full cleans. Gravel needs raking and weed management rather than washing.
