How Do I Program a Garage Door Opener?

Programming a garage door opener involves pairing the remote to the motor unit using the learn button, and setting the open and close limits so the door travels the correct distance in each direction.

Programming a garage door opener covers two distinct tasks: pairing the remote control to the motor unit receiver, and setting the travel limits so the door opens and closes to the correct positions. Most homeowners only need to deal with remote pairing; limit setting is typically done during initial installation or when the door behaviour changes.

Pairing the Remote

To pair a remote to the opener, locate the learn or program button on the motor unit. Press and release it to put the unit into learn mode. Within 30 seconds, press the desired button on the remote control until the opener unit confirms receipt, usually by a light flash or a click from the motor. Test the remote to confirm the door operates. For a full multi-remote setup, repeat for each additional remote.

Setting Travel Limits

Travel limits define how far the door travels in the open and close directions. An incorrectly set open limit results in the door not opening fully or travelling past the fully open position. An incorrectly set close limit results in the door not closing fully against the floor, or reversing when it reaches the floor because the motor detects too much resistance at the wrong position.

Travel limits are adjusted using limit adjustment screws or buttons on the motor unit, labelled Open and Close or marked with up and down arrows. Adjust the open limit until the door stops at the fully open position with the door panels clear of the opening. Adjust the close limit until the door sits fully closed against the floor seal without the opener reversing.

Force Adjustment

The force adjustment controls how hard the opener pushes or pulls before its obstacle detection stops the door. After fitting a new door seal, changing the spring tension, or fitting an insulated door, the force setting may need adjustment. Set the force to the minimum level that operates the door reliably; excessive force desensitises the obstacle detection and creates a safety risk.

Always test the safety reversal after any programming or force adjustment. Place a 50mm wooden block flat on the floor in the path of the closing door. The door should reverse automatically on contact with the block. If it does not, the close force is set too high and must be reduced. This safety test should be performed whenever any opener adjustment is made.

Summary

Program a garage door opener by pairing remotes using the learn button, and setting open and close travel limits so the door operates through its correct range. Force adjustment controls obstacle detection sensitivity and should be set to the minimum that operates the door reliably. Test the safety reversal after any adjustment by placing a block on the floor in the door's closing path.
