How to Fix a Garage Door Cable

A garage door cable that has snapped, come off its drum, or become tangled is a common fault on up-and-over and sectional doors. Cable repair or replacement is a job for a competent DIYer, but the spring tension must be fully released before starting.

Garage door cables are tensioned steel wire ropes that work in conjunction with the springs to control the door's movement. A cable that has snapped or derailed from its drum causes the door to operate unevenly or prevents it from opening and closing at all.

Safety First: Spring Tension

Before touching any garage door cable, the spring tension must be fully released. Working on a cable while the spring is tensioned is extremely dangerous: the spring stores significant mechanical energy and can release violently if disturbed. For an up-and-over door with a torsion spring above the door, the spring must be wound down by a qualified technician. For an extension spring system, the cables should only be worked on with the door fully open, which is the position where extension springs are at their most relaxed. If you are not confident identifying and safely managing the spring system, this job should be done by a garage door engineer.

Cable Off the Drum

If the cable is still intact but has come off its winding drum, the door can often be restored by carefully re-threading the cable onto the drum in the correct direction of wind. The cable must be seated in the groove of the drum and the drum retaining screw or clip must be secure. With extension spring systems, this can be done with the door in the open position with the springs relaxed. Check the door operation slowly after re-threading before returning to normal use.

Cable Replacement

If the cable has snapped, a replacement cable of the correct length and wire gauge must be sourced. Garage door cables are specified by length (typically 1.5 to 2.5 metres for standard up-and-over doors), wire diameter (commonly 2mm to 3mm), and end fitting type (loop, thimble, or swaged). Northwest Garage Door Spares stocks replacement cables for most standard UK garage door types. Fit the replacement cable following the routing of the original, ensuring it is correctly anchored at both the door end and the drum end.

Cable failure and cable derailment are often caused by worn or misaligned cable drums, worn pulleys, or a door that is out of balance due to spring wear. Replacing the cable without addressing the underlying cause typically results in the new cable failing in the same way within a short period. Inspect the drums, pulleys, and spring condition whenever a cable is replaced.

Summary

Always release spring tension before working on garage door cables. A derailed cable can often be re-threaded onto the drum with the door open and springs relaxed. A snapped cable requires a replacement of the correct specification: length, wire diameter, and end fitting. Inspect drums, pulleys, and springs for wear when replacing cables to prevent recurrence.
