A garage door that sticks is rarely just an inconvenience. It can leave the garage difficult to secure, put unnecessary strain on the opener and, in some cases, signal a worn component that is close to failing. A slight resistance on a cold, damp morning may be caused by a seal gripping the floor. A door that jams at the same point every time is more likely to have an alignment, roller, cable or track issue. Do not keep forcing it. Repeatedly pushing a sticking door or running the electric opener against an obstruction can turn a straightforward spare-part repair into a damaged mechanism.
Why Is My Garage Door Sticking at One Point?
When a door sticks at the same height on every opening or closing cycle, look closely at the moving hardware. Up-and-over doors rely on rollers, tracks, lifting arms, cables, cones and springs working together. Roller shutters depend on the curtain running cleanly through guide channels and winding evenly around the barrel. A fault in one area can make the whole door feel heavy, uneven or reluctant to move.
Start with the door fully closed and, if it is electric, disconnect the opener using the emergency release only when the door is safely down. Operate it by hand slowly. Listen for scraping, clicking or a metallic knock, and watch for one side lifting before the other. This gives a clearer indication of the fault than attempting to diagnose it while the motor is running.
Dirty, Bent or Misaligned Tracks
Tracks collect dust, leaves, cobwebs and old hardened grease. On an up-and-over door, debris in the horizontal or vertical track can stop a roller travelling freely. On roller shutters, dirt or damage inside the guide channels can pinch the curtain as it moves.
Clean loose debris with a brush and cloth, then inspect the track profile for dents, loose fixings or sections pulled out of line. A minor bend may be correctable, but a badly distorted track or guide should normally be replaced. Do not apply thick grease to a garage door track. It attracts more dirt and can make the problem return quickly. Use a suitable garage-door lubricant sparingly on the correct moving points instead.
Worn Rollers, Spindles and Hinges
A roller should turn smoothly without excessive side-to-side movement. If it has a flat spot, cracked wheel, seized bearing or worn spindle, it can drag through the track and make the door bind. On sectional and up-and-over doors, worn hinges or pivot points may also alter the door’s path enough to cause rubbing.
Look for black dust around nylon rollers, rusty steel wheels, wobble at the roller stem or a roller that does not rotate as the door moves. Replacing a worn roller before it damages the track is usually the sensible option. Compatibility matters here: roller diameter, stem length, spindle style and door manufacturer can all differ.
Cables, Cones and Springs Under Strain
If one side of the door appears lower than the other, a lifting cable may be frayed, stretched, off its drum or incorrectly routed. On canopy and retractable up-and-over doors, worn cables, cones, brackets or springs can prevent the door from lifting evenly. The result is often a sticking action that becomes worse as the door opens.
Treat springs and tensioned cables with care. They store significant energy and are not suitable for improvised repairs. A visibly broken spring, loose cable or damaged cone is a reason to stop using the door and obtain the right replacement parts or professional assistance. Never attempt to compensate for a failed spring by increasing the force setting on an electric opener.
The Floor Seal May Be Causing the Problem
A door that sticks only when first lifting from the floor may be catching on its bottom seal or threshold. This is particularly common after heavy rain, frost or a long period without use. Water can freeze around the bottom edge, while a perished rubber seal can adhere to painted concrete or an uneven threshold.
Check that the floor is clear and that no loose grit, stones or raised edge is trapping the seal. If the seal is split, flattened or hardened, it may no longer flex properly. Replacing the bottom seal can improve movement as well as reducing draughts, rainwater ingress and pests entering the garage.
A threshold seal can also cause trouble if it is too high for the door’s closing path, incorrectly positioned or lifting at the edges. The door should close onto the seal without needing excessive force. If the door has started sticking after a threshold installation, check its height and position before altering any opener settings.
Electric Garage Doors: Check the Opener After the Door
An electric opener can make a mechanical problem more obvious, but it is not always the cause. If the door moves freely by hand once disconnected but stops, reverses or strains under power, inspect the opener system next.
The travel limits may be set incorrectly, making the motor try to pull the door too far into the floor or push it too high at the top. Safety sensors on compatible systems should also be clean, aligned and unobstructed. A damaged boom, worn trolley, bent link arm or failing drive gear can create resistance that feels similar to a sticking door.
If the door is heavy or difficult to move manually, do not adjust the opener force to make it operate. The opener is designed to move a balanced door, not lift a door with failed springs or seized hardware. Overworking it can damage the motor and compromise safe reversal operation.
Roller Shutter Doors Need Different Checks
Roller shutter garage doors do not use the same tracks, lifting arms or rollers as an up-and-over door. The curtain runs in side guides and winds around a barrel, so sticking is commonly linked to guide alignment, curtain damage, worn end locks or a problem at the axle and motor.
Inspect both guides for dirt, dents and loose screws. Check whether the curtain slats are sitting squarely, especially if the door has been forced or caught by wind. A damaged slat may snag in the guide, while a loose or broken end lock can allow the curtain to shift sideways as it rises.
For electrically operated roller shutters, stop using the door if the curtain is winding unevenly around the barrel. Continuing to run it can crease the slats or pull the curtain out of the guides. The correct repair may involve replacement slats, end locks, guide components or a compatible motor-related part, depending on the fault.
A Practical Fault-Finding Order
Before ordering parts, work through the simple checks in a sensible order. Clear the floor and tracks first, then inspect seals and visible moving parts. Next, test the manual operation with the opener disconnected. Finally, check the electric controls, limits and drive components only if the door itself moves smoothly by hand.
Take clear photographs of the damaged part and note the door manufacturer, model where known, and any measurements that identify the component. For a roller, that may mean wheel diameter and stem length. For a cable or spring assembly, record the door type and the position of the existing fittings. For seals, measure the channel or retainer profile as well as the width of the door.
