DIY Garage Storage Ideas
A well-organised garage is a more useful and safer space. These practical DIY storage ideas will help you make the most of walls, ceilings, and floor space without spending a fortune. The garage is one of the most underused and over-cluttered spaces in many UK homes. A lack of organisation means tools are hard to find, the car no longer fits, and the space accumulates everything that has no obvious home elsewhere in the house. The good news is that transforming garage storage is one of the most satisfying DIY projects you can undertake, and most of the effective solutions are inexpensive and achievable in a weekend.
Start by Decluttering
Before building any storage, declutter thoroughly. Garages accumulate years of items kept on the basis that they might be useful one day. Go through everything in the garage and categorise it into keep, donate, and dispose. This step alone dramatically reduces the storage challenge. Once you know what you are storing, you can design the storage around what you actually need rather than around everything that has accumulated over the years.
Wall-Mounted Shelving
Wall-mounted shelving is the most efficient way to use garage space because it takes items off the floor without sacrificing floor area. Heavy-duty metal shelving brackets fixed to the wall studs or into masonry with appropriate fixings can support significant weight. Plywood or particleboard shelves cut to width are inexpensive and can be cut to fit between the wall studs or the structural pillars of the garage frame. Depth of around 300 to 400mm is ideal for most garage items without protruding into the working space excessively.
A full run of shelving along one or two walls, extending from waist height up to just below head height, can provide substantial storage capacity. Items used frequently should be at eye level. Seasonal items such as Christmas decorations or garden furniture cushions can go higher up where they are accessible by a stepladder but do not take up prime shelving space.
Pegboard for Tools
A panel of pegboard, the perforated hardboard that accepts hooks and brackets, fixed to a garage wall creates an extremely flexible tool storage system. Hooks, brackets, and clips of various types allow you to hang everything from screwdrivers and pliers to extension leads, garden hand tools, and power tools. The visual display makes it easy to see what you have and notice when something has been borrowed and not returned. Pegboard can be painted to resist moisture and is inexpensive to buy and install.
Overhead Storage for Seasonal Items
The ceiling of a garage is often completely unused. Purpose-made ceiling storage platforms, suspended from the joists on adjustable straps, create a raised platform on which plastic storage boxes, roof boxes, kayaks, or camping equipment can be stored overhead. This keeps bulky seasonal items well out of the way without using any wall or floor space. DIY ceiling platforms can be built from timber suspended from the ceiling joists with all-thread rod and joist hangers, creating a robust and inexpensive overhead storage area.
Before mounting any heavy storage on the ceiling, check what is above it. If there is a room above the garage, the ceiling will be a floor structure that should be able to take the load. If it is an insulated but unboarded roof space, check the joist size and span before loading it heavily. If in doubt, consult a structural engineer.
A Workbench with Storage Below
A simple workbench built from timber and plywood along one wall provides a working surface and creates storage space beneath it. Shelves or cabinets below the bench can house power tools, paint tins, and workshop consumables. The bench top itself should be at a comfortable working height, typically around 900mm, and should be sturdy enough to support a vice and withstand hammering. A workbench is one of the most useful additions to any garage and is well within the capabilities of a competent DIYer to build.
Hooks and Rails for Bikes and Garden Tools
Bicycles take up significant floor space but can be stored vertically using wall-mounted hooks that hold the wheel. A row of bikes stored vertically along a wall takes a fraction of the floor space of bikes stored horizontally. Heavy-duty hooks screwed into wall studs or masonry can hold bikes of any size. Horizontal rails or hook strips on walls are equally effective for long-handled garden tools such as rakes, spades, and brooms, keeping them accessible and off the floor where they create trip hazards.
Summary
Transforming garage storage is achievable with a methodical approach and modest materials. Wall-mounted shelving, pegboard tool panels, overhead storage platforms, a workbench with integrated storage, and bike and garden tool hooks can collectively convert a chaotic garage into a well-organised and genuinely useful space. The starting point is always decluttering; only then does it make sense to design and build storage around what you actually need to keep.
