Choosing the Right Novoferm Garage Door Seal

A draught at the bottom of a garage door is rarely just a draught. It is where rainwater, leaves, road grit and cold air find their way in, often leaving the floor damp and making the garage harder to use. The right Novoferm garage door seal can close that gap without affecting how the door opens, locks or sits in its frame.

The key is not to order the first rubber strip that looks close enough. Garage door seals are shaped to work with specific door edges, channels and movement patterns. A bottom seal for a Novoferm up-and-over door may not suit a sectional door, and a threshold seal is a different solution again. Taking a few minutes to identify the problem and measure correctly can prevent an awkward return and a seal that folds, drags or fails to touch the floor.

Start by finding where the garage is letting in water

Stand inside the garage on a dry day with the door closed. Look for daylight around the bottom corners, along the side frame and at the top edge. If the issue appears after heavy rain, check the floor for the direction of water marks. This tells you whether the fault is in the door-mounted seal, the frame seal or the gap between the door and the driveway.

A worn bottom seal is the usual culprit where there is a visible gap under the door or cold air across the floor. The rubber may be split, flattened or hardened with age. On an up-and-over door, it can also pull away from the retaining channel at one end.

If water comes around the sides, inspect the vertical frame seals and the door alignment. A new side seal will not cure a door that has dropped, a bent frame or worn rollers. Likewise, if water runs down a sloping drive and pools at the threshold, a replacement bottom strip alone may not be enough. A bonded threshold seal is often the more effective addition in that situation.

There are several seal positions, each doing a different job. Ordering becomes much simpler once you know which one needs replacing.

Bottom weather seals

A bottom weather seal fits to the lower edge of the door and compresses against the floor when the door is shut. Depending on the Novoferm door design, it may slide into an aluminium or plastic retainer, push into a channel, or be secured beneath a bottom rail.

The profile matters. A T-shaped, bulb, finned or angled seal may look broadly similar in a photograph, but the retaining section and finished height can differ. Measure the width of the channel and the old seal profile where possible. If the original seal has perished beyond recognition, a clear photograph of the bottom rail and its groove is usually more useful than a measurement taken from damaged rubber.

A bottom seal can improve comfort, reduce dirt entering the garage and help deter insects. It is not a cure for a badly uneven concrete floor, however. Where the floor rises or dips significantly, a taller or more flexible profile may help, but a threshold seal is normally the better answer.

Side and top seals

Side and top seals sit around the frame opening. They close the gap between the door panel and the frame, reducing wind-driven rain and draughts. These seals are especially relevant on doors exposed to prevailing weather, or where the garage is attached to the house.

Check whether the existing strip is fixed to the frame, the stop moulding or the door itself. The fixing arrangement is as important as the rubber shape. Some seals are supplied for a particular frame system, while others are more adaptable for repairs where the original part is no longer available.

Threshold seals

A garage door threshold seal is fixed to the garage floor rather than the door. It forms a raised rubber barrier that the closed door compresses against. This is useful on uneven floors, drives that slope towards the garage and openings where rain is pushed under the door by wind.

Threshold products are often more universal than a door-mounted replacement seal, but they still need planning. The door must be able to travel over the seal on opening, and there must be enough closing clearance for the bottom edge to compress against it. Measure the full opening width and choose a threshold long enough to extend slightly beyond the sides of the door where appropriate.

Check your door type before ordering

Novoferm has produced different garage door designs over many years, so the brand name alone is not always enough to identify the correct seal. Start with the door type and how it moves.

An up-and-over door swings outward before lifting into the garage. Its bottom seal needs to remain secure as the door moves through that arc. A sectional door travels vertically in separate panels and commonly uses perimeter seals that work with the frame and panel joints. A roller door coils above the opening, so the bottom rail and guide arrangement determine the type of seal required.

Look for a label on the inside face of the door, the frame or the operating mechanism. Note any model information, door size and the position of the existing seal. For older doors without a readable label, photographs of the complete door, the lower edge and the seal retaining channel make identification far more reliable.

Do not assume that a seal advertised for a similar-looking door will fit your own. A seal that is too wide may not enter the channel; one that is too narrow can work loose. A profile that is too deep can create excess closing pressure, causing an electric operator to reverse or placing strain on the locking arrangement.

Measure the opening and the seal profile

For a replacement bottom seal, measure the width of the existing strip or the full width of the door bottom rail. It is usually sensible to buy sufficient length for the complete run and trim it neatly after fitting, rather than join short sections in the middle.

Then measure the channel or retainer. Record its internal width and take a photograph from the end, as this shows the profile shape. If the seal is retained by screws or a clip-on carrier, photograph that too. Measurements should be taken in millimetres and checked twice, particularly on older doors where previous repairs may have changed the original arrangement.

For a threshold seal, measure the clear opening between the frame legs and assess the floor. Use a straight edge across the threshold to identify high and low spots. Small surface imperfections are normal and good adhesive can cope with them, provided the floor is clean and sound. Cracked, dusty or flaking concrete may need preparation before the seal is bonded down.

Fitting a replacement seal without creating new problems

Most door seals are straightforward DIY jobs, but fitting method depends on the door and profile. Start by removing the old seal and clearing the retaining channel of grit, old adhesive and fragments of rubber. A blocked channel makes sliding a new seal unnecessarily difficult.

When feeding a seal into a channel, avoid stretching it. Pulling the rubber tight may make it shrink back later, leaving a gap at one end. Work it through steadily, keeping the profile straight. A small amount of suitable lubricant can help with a tight channel, but avoid anything that could attack rubber or leave a slippery film on the floor.

Close the door carefully after fitting and inspect the contact along the full width. The seal should compress evenly, not buckle under the corners or drag excessively across the floor. On automated doors, test the safety reverse function after any adjustment. If the door reverses before closing, the seal may be too tall, the floor may be uneven, or the operator's force setting may need checking in line with its instructions.

For threshold seals, dry-fit first and mark the final position. The door should close onto the centre of the raised section, not behind it. Clean and dry the floor thoroughly before applying adhesive, then allow the adhesive to cure fully before driving over the threshold or exposing it to heavy use.

When a seal problem is really a door repair problem

A replacement seal cannot compensate for worn moving parts indefinitely. If the bottom gap is larger on one side, the door may be out of level. Check rollers, cables, lifting arms, hinges and brackets as relevant to the door type. A damaged bottom rail can also prevent a new seal from sitting correctly.

On an up-and-over door, poor balance or worn cones and cables can change the way the door closes. On sectional doors, damaged rollers or hinges may stop panels seating properly against the frame. Correcting the underlying fault first protects the new seal and restores smoother operation.
