The main parts of a garage door
Most garage door repairs come down to one of six parts. Here is what each one does and the usual sign that it needs replacing.
Springs
Springs balance the weight of the door so it lifts easily and stays where you leave it. A door that feels heavy, drops shut or will not stay open usually needs new springs. Most are identified by make and colour. View garage door springs
Cables and cones
Cables are the wires that lift the door and cones are the fittings that hold each cable end. A frayed or snapped cable leaves the door hanging at an angle. Replace both sides together so the door lifts evenly. View cables and cones
Remote controls
The handset or key fob that works your electric opener. A replacement is matched by make, model and frequency. View remote controls
Locks and handles
The outside handle, the lock barrel and the latches that hold the door shut. A handle that spins or a key that will not turn usually means a worn lock. View locks and handles
Seals
Rubber or brush strips along the bottom, sides and top of the door, plus threshold strips fixed to the floor. They keep out rain, leaves and draughts. View garage door seals
