A cold strip of air under the garage door usually tells you two things straight away. First, your garage door draught proofing is no longer doing its job. Second, the problem is rarely just “the seal” - it is often a mix of worn rubber, uneven floors, poor side sealing or a door that is no longer sitting square in the opening.
That matters whether your garage is used for storage, as a workshop, or simply as the route into the house. Draughts bring in cold air, road dust, leaves and, in bad weather, surface water. They also make the space harder to keep usable through winter and can leave tools, boxes and door hardware exposed to damp conditions for longer than they should be.
What garage door draught proofing actually does
Good garage door draught proofing closes the gaps where air and debris get in - most often along the threshold, the side edges and the top of the frame. On some doors, especially older up-and-over models, the largest gap is at floor level. On others, the bottom seal may look acceptable, but the side weather strips have hardened, split or pulled away from the frame.
The goal is not to make a standard garage completely airtight. That is neither realistic nor always desirable. The aim is to reduce unwanted airflow, stop water ingress where possible, and improve the fit between door and opening without affecting normal operation.
That last point is where many people come unstuck. Fit a seal that is too thick, too high or unsuitable for the door type, and you can create a different problem - drag on the door, poor closing, extra strain on the mechanism or an inconsistent seal that still leaves gaps.
Start with the gap, not the product
Before ordering anything, check where the draught is actually coming from. A threshold seal may be the right answer, but it is not always the only one.
Look first at the bottom edge of the door with it fully closed. If there is a visible gap between the floor and door, especially in the centre or at one corner, the floor level may be uneven or the bottom seal may have compressed over time. If the door sits tight at the bottom but you can feel air movement at the sides, side seals or frame seals are the likely weak point.
Also pay attention to door alignment. Worn rollers, tired link arms, slack cables, damaged brackets or general age-related movement can alter how the door meets the frame. In those cases, replacing seals alone may improve things, but it will not fully cure the issue because the door is not closing evenly in the first place.
Threshold seals vs bottom seals
This is where a lot of confusion starts, because people often use the terms interchangeably.
A bottom seal is attached to the garage door itself. It moves up and down with the door and is there to cushion and seal against the floor when closed. If the existing rubber is split, flattened or missing in sections, replacing like for like is usually the sensible starting point.
A threshold seal is fixed to the garage floor. It creates a raised sealing point that the door closes against. These are especially useful where the floor is slightly uneven, where rainwater tends to track back under the door, or where you want an improved barrier against leaves, dust and draughts.
For many domestic garages, a threshold seal gives the clearest improvement in day-to-day performance. It can help bridge minor irregularities in the floor that a basic bottom seal cannot cope with. That said, it still depends on the door coming down properly onto the seal. If the door is twisted, poorly adjusted or worn at the running gear, no threshold product can fully compensate.
Side and top seals are often the missing piece
If you have already replaced the bottom edge sealing and the garage still feels cold, check the frame perimeter. Side and top seals are easy to overlook because the draught is less obvious than a visible gap under the door. Yet on many older installations, these are the parts that have gone hard, brittle or detached.
On up-and-over doors, worn side weather strips can leave a surprising amount of open space once the door is shut. On roller and sectional setups, degraded side sealing can also reduce weather resistance and let in dust. If the garage backs onto the house or is used to store items sensitive to damp, these smaller gaps are worth dealing with properly.
The practical approach is to think of garage door draught proofing as a system rather than a single strip of rubber. Bottom, threshold, sides and top all work together. Ignore one area and the overall result is often disappointing.
When the real issue is wear in the door hardware
There is a point where adding more sealing stops being the answer. If the door drops unevenly, catches as it closes, or needs force to latch, inspect the mechanical parts before spending more on weatherproofing.
Common causes include worn rollers, tired spindles, stretched cables, ageing springs and loose brackets. A handle or lock position that no longer lines up cleanly can also be a clue that the door is sitting differently in the frame than it used to. In practical terms, the seal is only ever as good as the closing action behind it.
This is especially relevant with older branded doors where the original hardware has seen years of use but the door itself is still serviceable. Replacing a few compatible running or fixing parts can restore the fit well enough for new seals to work as intended. That is often better value than putting up with a draughty garage or assuming the whole door needs replacing.
Choosing the right garage door draught proofing
Compatibility matters more than people expect. Garage doors vary by type, age, manufacturer and fixing arrangement, so the “universal” answer is not always quite universal in practice.
For threshold products, measure the clear opening width and look at the floor condition. If the floor is rough, cracked or contaminated, preparation becomes just as important as the seal itself. Adhesive-backed threshold seals need a clean, dry, stable surface if they are going to stay put.
For bottom and perimeter seals, check the profile, mounting style and the amount of compression needed. Too little compression leaves gaps. Too much can make the door hard to close and increase wear on the mechanism. Preparation does most of the heavy lifting. Work with the door fully closed when checking seal contact. You want even pressure across the width, not a seal that is crushed in one section and barely touched in another. If the floor falls away slightly, a threshold can help, but only within reason.
After fitting, test the door several times. Listen for rubbing, watch for drag points and check that locks, latches and automation still engage correctly. A seal that improves weather resistance but compromises reliable closing is not a finished job.
Is garage door draught proofing worth it?
In most cases, yes - especially if the garage is attached to the house, used frequently or stores items you want to keep dry and clean. The improvement can be immediate: less cold air movement, less debris blowing in, and better resistance to surface water at the front edge.
It is not a substitute for full insulation, and it will not turn a basic garage into conditioned living space. But that is not really the point. Good sealing deals with the obvious weak spots and helps the door perform more like it should have done all along.
If your garage door is fundamentally sound, draught proofing is usually a practical upgrade rather than a major project. If the door is worn, misaligned or struggling to close evenly, treat the seal and the hardware as part of the same repair. That is how you get a result that lasts through more than one winter.
