How Do I Replace a Henderson Garage Door Lock or Handle?
Henderson T-handles, lock bodies and latch assemblies are straightforward to replace and pattern parts are widely available. The most important measurement before ordering is the spindle length, which varies across Henderson door models. This guide covers the lock system components and how to replace each one
Henderson lock system components
| Component | Function | Symptom when failed |
|---|---|---|
| T-handle (external) | External grip for operating the lock | Handle loose, broken, corroded or missing |
| Lock body | Central cam mechanism connecting handle to lock rods | Handle turns but door does not lock or unlock |
| Lock rod cables | Cables running from lock body to latches at top or bottom of door | Door latches on one side only; latch cable disconnected |
| Latch assembly (keep/keeper) | Catch at top or bottom of door engaging with frame | Door does not hold closed; latch worn or broken |
| Internal handle / rope | Internal pull cord or lever for opening from inside | Difficult to open door from inside |
| Anti-vandal lock (flush lock) | Alternative recessed lock on some Premier doors for added security | Key no longer operates or lock seized |
Replacing a Henderson T-handle
Henderson T-handles are secured from the inside of the door with bolts passing through the door skin. The spindle (the shaft passing through the door connecting the handle to the lock body) must match the door skin thickness. The most common Henderson spindle lengths are:
- 31mm: Thin panel doors, some Merlin and Doric models
- 75mm / 76mm: Standard Premier canopy and retractable doors
To replace: open the door, remove the bolts from the inside face, withdraw the old handle from the outside and fit the new handle in reverse order. Confirm the spindle length matches before ordering.
Replacing lock rod cables
Lock rod cables run from the central lock body to the latch at the top (canopy doors) or bottom (retractable doors) of the door. If a cable is kinked, broken or disconnected, the latch on that side will not operate. To replace: access the lock body from the inside of the door, disconnect the old cable from the cam and from the latch bracket, thread the new cable along the same route and reconnect at both ends. Test the lock operation before closing the door.
