Why Garage Door Won't Lock and How to Fix It

You usually notice it at the worst possible moment - late at night, bad weather, or when you are trying to leave the property secure in a hurry. In most cases, the issue comes down to wear in the locking parts, misalignment in the door, or a problem with how the mechanism engages when the door is fully closed.
The key is not to force it. A garage door that will not lock is already telling you that something is out of position, worn out, or no longer moving as it should. Why garage door won't lock - the usual causes
Most garage door locks fail for mechanical reasons rather than anything complicated. On an up and over door, the lock may look simple from the outside, but several parts need to line up correctly. The handle turns the spindle, the spindle operates the lock bars or latch, and those parts need to move freely into the keeps or locking points. If any one of those sections is worn, bent or out of line, the lock will not engage properly.
One of the most common causes is simple misalignment. If the door has dropped slightly over time, or the frame has shifted, the locking bars may no longer meet the keeps cleanly. You turn the handle, but instead of sliding home, the bars catch the edge or stop short. This is especially common on older garage doors where rollers, cones, cables or springs have started to wear and the door no longer sits square in the opening.
Worn lock components are another regular culprit. Handles loosen, spindles round off, lock bars bend, and latches lose tension. Check the handle, spindle and lock bars
If the door closes properly but still will not lock, move to the lock assembly itself. The handle is the first place to inspect. A cracked or loose handle can stop you applying enough movement to engage the bars properly. If the handle turns more than usual, or spins without resistance, the spindle may be worn or disconnected.
The spindle is a small part, but it does a lot of work. When it wears down, especially on older branded doors, the connection between handle and lock mechanism becomes unreliable. You turn the key or handle, but the bars barely move. In that case, replacing only the barrel may do nothing. The fault is in the drive between the handle and the locking mechanism.
Look at the lock bars as well. They should move evenly and without snagging. Bent bars, seized guides or damaged latches can all stop the system engaging. If one side moves and the other does not, that usually points to a linkage issue rather than a complete lock failure.
When the key turns but the garage door still won't lock
This is one of the most common versions of the problem. The key goes in, it turns, but the garage remains unsecured. That usually narrows the fault to a failed barrel cam, a worn spindle, or a broken connection inside the lock body.
In practical terms, the barrel may still feel as though it is working because the key rotates normally, but the movement is no longer being transferred to the rest of the mechanism. Some lock barrels wear internally. Others are simply the wrong replacement for the existing handle and door setup, which is why matching by manufacturer and door type matters.
Compatibility is often overlooked. A part that looks close enough is not always close enough. Stiff locks, seized latches and weather-related faults

During colder periods, small amounts of rust or grime become much more obvious because the mechanism has less tolerance for resistance.
If the lock has gradually become harder to use over months, that points more towards wear or contamination than sudden breakage. Gentle cleaning and the correct lubricant may help, but only if the parts are still in reasonable condition. If the latch is badly corroded or the bars are distorted, lubrication is only a short-term measure.
There is a trade-off here. Maintenance can restore movement in a lightly stiffened lock, but it will not put metal back where it has worn away. If the handle has excessive play or the spindle edges have rounded off, replacement is the more reliable fix.
Electric garage doors can still have locking issues
If you have an automated garage door, the fault may not sit only in the manual lock. Some electric doors rely on the opener holding the door in the closed position, while others use physical locking devices or latch systems. If the door is not travelling fully closed, the lock may not line up. If an emergency release has been left partially engaged, that can also affect secure closure.
On roller doors and sectional systems, side locks, bottom slat locks or end retention parts can wear or shift. The result is the same - the door does not secure properly even though the main motor appears to function.
That is why it helps to think of the lock as part of a wider system. A locking complaint is sometimes really a travel limit issue, alignment fault, or worn door hardware problem showing up at the point of closure.
Repair or replace?
If the issue is minor misalignment, adjustment may be enough. If the lock mechanism is stiff but intact, cleaning and lubrication may restore movement. But if the handle is cracked, the spindle is worn, the bars are bent, or the barrel has failed internally, replacement is normally the sensible route.
For most property owners and tradespeople, the best result comes from identifying the exact part rather than guessing. Garage door locks and handles are not universal in the way many expect. Brand, door type, age and fixing pattern all matter. Buying the right replacement first time saves a lot of frustration and usually gets the door secure again much faster.
