How Do I Replace a Gliderol Garage Door Lock?
A Gliderol roller door lock that no longer operates correctly is a security risk that should be replaced promptly. The inline lock, locking strap and locking ring all work together and should be inspected together when any one component fails. This guide covers the replacement process and what to check across the full locking system
How the Gliderol locking system works
Gliderol roller doors lock using an inline roller shutter lock that sits within one of the door laths. The lock barrel engages a locking strap, which passes through the lath and is secured on the inside by a locking ring (on 55mm lath doors) or a bolt and nut arrangement (on 77mm lath doors). When the key is turned, the lock barrel grips or releases the locking strap, securing the door against the guide rails.
Identifying the correct lock before ordering
| Component | Measurement needed | Options |
|---|---|---|
| Inline lock | Barrel length (measure inside the lath opening) | Old-style: 10-inch (250mm). New-style: 5-inch (125mm). |
| Locking strap | Lath width | 55mm or 77mm (4-segment for 77mm lath). |
| Locking ring | Lath width | 55mm ring for 55mm lath. Not required for 77mm lath (nut and bolt fixing). |
Replacing a Gliderol inline lock
- From outside the door, identify the lath containing the lock. The lock face plate is visible in the lath opening.
- Insert the key and turn it to the unlocked position to retract the lock mechanism.
- From inside the garage, locate the retaining nut or clip that holds the lock barrel in place behind the lath face. Remove the retaining nut or clip.
- From outside, withdraw the old lock barrel through the lath opening by pulling it forward and out.
- Insert the new lock barrel into the lath opening from outside, ensuring the barrel sits flush with the lath face plate.
- From inside, fit the retaining nut or clip to hold the barrel in position. Do not overtighten: the barrel needs to be secure but should not be distorted.
- Test the lock operation with the key from outside before closing the door.
Inspecting the locking strap and ring at the same time
While the lock is removed, inspect the locking strap and ring (or nut) from inside the door. Look for:
- Strap pulled through or deformed at the lock engagement point
- Cracked or broken locking ring (55mm lath doors)
- Loose or missing retaining nut (77mm lath doors)
If the strap or ring is damaged, replace it at the same time as the lock. A new lock fitted against a worn strap will not secure the door reliably.
