Common Gliderol Garage Door Faults and Fixes

What Are the Most Common Gliderol Garage Door Faults?

Gliderol roller garage doors are generally reliable but develop a predictable set of faults over time. Most can be resolved with inexpensive replacement parts. This guide covers the most common Gliderol faults across the locking system, remote operation and door travel, with the cause and correct fix for each

Common fault diagnosis guide

Symptom Most likely cause Fix
Door cannot be locked from outside Inline lock barrel seized or worn Replace the inline lock. Confirm old-style (10-inch) or new-style (5-inch) before ordering.
Key turns but door does not lock Locking strap pulled through lath; cracked locking ring Inspect locking strap and ring from inside. Replace whichever component has failed. Replace both if both are worn.
Locking strap loose or rattling Locking ring cracked or locking nut loose Tighten the retaining nut (77mm) or replace the locking ring (55mm).
Remote stops working Flat battery Replace the battery first. If the remote still does not work, reprogram it to the motor. If reprogramming fails, replace the handset.
Motor hums but door does not move Drive mechanism fault; obstruction in guide rail Check for obstruction in the guide rail. If clear, the drive mechanism may need inspection or replacement. Contact Northwest Garage Door Spares.
Door travels unevenly or jams at one side Guide rail misalignment; debris in rail Inspect guide rails for visible damage or debris. Clean rails with a dry cloth. Check all rail fixing screws are secure. If rails are bent or damaged, contact us for advice.
Door will not roll fully up or down Travel limit setting on motor; obstruction Check for physical obstruction at the top or bottom of travel. Adjust the travel limit switches on the motor unit per the motor manual.
Door rattles in wind Guide rail side clearance too wide; worn end caps on laths Check the guide rail fixing positions. A small amount of play in the rails is normal but excessive clearance allows the door to rattle. Contact Northwest Garage Door Spares for advice on rail adjustment.
Lath visibly cracked or damaged Impact damage or age-related fatigue Individual laths can be replaced but the repair requires removing the door curtain from the drum. Contact Northwest Garage Door Spares for advice on lath replacement.

Annual maintenance checklist

Gliderol roller doors require minimal maintenance but benefit from an annual check:

  • Lubricate the guide rails with a silicone or PTFE spray. Do not use oil-based lubricants which attract dirt and can cause the laths to stick.
  • Lubricate the lock barrel with a graphite or PTFE lock lubricant.
  • Inspect the locking strap and ring or nut from inside the door for wear or cracking.
  • Test the remote from the furthest practical distance. Reduced range often signals a battery approaching end of life.
  • Check all guide rail fixing screws and the motor unit mounting bolts are secure.
  • Run the door through its full travel and listen for unusual sounds or check for uneven movement.
The locking strap is the most commonly overlooked Gliderol component. Most owners replace the lock when the door will not lock, but the strap is equally likely to be the cause. If a new lock still does not hold the door securely, inspect the strap and ring immediately. Replacing both together is the most reliable fix when the locking system has become unreliable.
