Common Cardale Garage Door Faults and Fixes

What Are the Most Common Cardale Garage Door Faults?
Cardale garage doors develop a predictable set of faults as they age. Most are inexpensive to fix with the right replacement parts. This guide covers the most common faults across CD45, CD Professional, Maximiser, Slideaway and Entex Cardale doors with the cause and correct fix for each
Common fault diagnosis guide
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Door very heavy to lift | Broken or weakened spring | Replace spring. Confirm model: CD45 overhead spring, Entex colour-coded spring or Maximiser spring drum. Order by door width for canopy models. |
| Door drops on one side when opening | Frayed or snapped cable | Replace both cables. Confirm stud-end CD45 cables, CD Pro SafeLift cables or Maximiser clock spring cables as appropriate. |
| Grinding or scraping when door moves | Worn or seized roller spindles | Replace roller spindle assemblies. Lubricate new spindles after fitting. Confirm CD45 or SafeLift anti-drop type. |
| Door does not latch when closed | Top spring latch failure; disconnected latch cable | Inspect top spring latch assembly and latch cable. Replace the latch assembly or reconnect/replace the cable. Confirm top spring latch (CD45) or rear crucifix cam (Maximiser). |
| Handle turns but door will not lock | Broken cam in lock body; latch cable disconnected | Replace lock mechanism body. Check latch cable connections at both the lock body and latch assembly. |
| Remote stops working | Flat battery; lost pairing | Replace battery first. If still not working, reprogram the remote to the motor. Confirm DC Series (up-and-over) or PDT Rolltec (Thermoglide) system. |
| SafeLift triggered, door jammed in track | Cable snapped, triggering the anti-drop latch | Replace the snapped CD Pro SafeLift cable. Then replace the SafeLift spindle assembly. Only reset the latch after the new cable is in place. |
| Maximiser door heavy or difficult to push up | Worn Maximiser spring drum or stretched clock spring cables | Replace the Maximiser spring drum. Confirm Mk1 or Mk2 before ordering. Replace clock spring cables at the same time. |
| Door stiff or heavy in cold weather | Seized spindles or insufficient lubrication | Lubricate all roller spindles, the spring shaft bearing points and the lock mechanism with silicone or PTFE spray. |
| Door rattles in the closed position | Worn top spring latch or keeper misalignment | Inspect the top spring latch assembly and keeper. Adjust keeper position or replace worn latch components. |
Annual maintenance checklist
- Lubricate all roller spindles, the spring shaft bearing points, the lock mechanism and the latch assemblies with a silicone or PTFE-based spray.
- Inspect cables along their full length for fraying, kinking or wear at the cone end and the bottom stud bracket.
- Test the door balance: open to halfway, release, and check the door stays stationary. A rising door has too much spring tension; a dropping door has too little.
- Operate the T-handle or eurolock handle and confirm both top latches engage and disengage cleanly.
- Test the remote from the furthest practical distance. Reduced range is often an early sign of battery failure.
- On Maximiser doors, check the spring drum and clock spring cables for wear or fraying at the drum exit point.
Cardale CD45 latch cable disconnection is common on older doors. The latch cable can work loose from the top spring latch bracket over time, particularly on doors that have been adjusted or removed and refitted. If only one side of the door latches, check the latch cable connection at the top corner on the unlatching side before ordering any replacement parts.
