Cardale Cones and Cables Replacement

How Do I Replace Cardale Cones and Cables?

Frayed or snapped Cardale cables are among the most common faults on these doors and are straightforward to replace. The correct cable and cone type depends on your specific Cardale model. This guide covers identification and step-by-step replacement for CD45 canopy, CD Professional SafeLift and Maximiser clock spring cable systems

Cable and cone types by Cardale model

Model Cable type Cone/drum type
CD45 canopy Stud-end cable. Metal stud crimped into cable bottom end. Standard 3mm steel or stainless. Standard CD45 spring cone (cable drum) on the spring shaft end.
CD Professional (SafeLift) CD Pro SafeLift cable. Works with the SafeLift pulley drum system. SafeLift pulley drum (not a standard cone). The pulley drum includes an anti-drop safety mechanism.
Maximiser Mk1 Clock spring cables. Flat section cable from the spring drum to the door. Maximiser Mk1 spring drum. The drum houses the clock spring and the cable exits through a slot in the drum housing.
Maximiser II (Mk2) Mk2 clock spring cables. Different drum exit configuration from Mk1. Maximiser II spring drum. Confirm Mk1 or Mk2 by the drum shape before ordering cables.
Slideaway Slideaway clock spring cables (pair, stainless steel). Slideaway spring drum. Similar in principle to Maximiser but different drum dimensions.
Old pre-CD45 Earlier cable end type. Loop or older stud pattern. Older cone/drum pattern. Confirm from existing cable and cone dimensions.

Replacing CD45 canopy door cables

  1. Open the door fully and clamp it securely in the open position on the track.
  2. Photograph the cable routing and cone positions on both sides before starting.
  3. At the bottom of the door, the cable stud end slots into a bracket on the door bottom rail. Press the stud end out of its slot to release the cable.
  4. At the spring shaft, unwind the cable from the cone groove by rotating the cone carefully.
  5. If also replacing the cone, remove the cone from the shaft noting its position and orientation.
  6. Fit the new cone to the shaft. Thread the new cable over the cone groove from the top, routing it down to the bottom bracket, and locate the stud end in the bracket slot.
  7. Lower the door slowly, allowing the spring to wind the cable onto the cone. Check the cable sits correctly in the cone groove on both sides.
Always replace CD45 cables in pairs. Both cables wear at the same rate. If one has snapped or frayed, the other is at a similar service life stage. Stainless steel CD45 cable pairs are available from Northwest Garage Door Spares for improved corrosion resistance.
The CD Professional SafeLift pulley drum is not the same as a standard CD45 cone. If your door has the SafeLift system, use the correct SafeLift cables and pulley drums. Fitting standard CD45 cones in place of SafeLift pulley drums removes the anti-drop safety protection built into the system.
