Cardale Spindles and Rollers Replacement

How Do I Replace Cardale Spindles and Rollers?

Worn Cardale roller spindles cause doors to bind, scrape or travel unevenly and are one of the most common sources of noise on older Cardale doors. This guide covers how to identify the correct spindle for your Cardale door model and the step-by-step replacement process

Cardale roller spindle types

Model Spindle type Key notes
CD45 canopy Standard CD45 roller spindle with bracket Roller sits in the side track channel. Confirm spindle length before ordering. Standard and extended lengths available.
CD Professional (SafeLift) SafeLift anti-drop spindle assembly Includes integrated anti-drop safety latch. Must be replaced as a complete assembly. Do not substitute a plain CD45 spindle.
Maximiser / Slideaway Retractable-gear spindle and bracket Different bracket profile and track engagement from canopy spindles. Confirm Maximiser or Slideaway type before ordering. The Maximiser spindle bracket kit is the complete assembly.
Double-width canopy Roller spindle and bracket for double-width doors Double-width doors use a paired roller spindle arrangement. Confirm single or double-width before ordering.

Signs that Cardale spindles need replacing

  • Scraping or grinding sound when the door moves
  • Door deviates from the track or sticks at a specific point
  • Roller visibly worn flat or seized and not rotating during door travel
  • Spindle shaft bent or heavily corroded
  • SafeLift anti-drop latch has triggered, leaving the door jammed in the track

Replacing a Cardale CD45 roller spindle

  1. Open the door fully and clamp it securely in the open position on the track.
  2. The spindle assembly sits in the side track bracket. Remove the retaining bolt or circlip securing the spindle shaft to the bracket.
  3. Slide the old spindle assembly out of the track and bracket.
  4. Fit the new spindle into the bracket, ensuring the roller sits correctly in the track channel.
  5. Secure the shaft with the retaining bolt or circlip. Lower the door and test operation through the full travel range.
If your CD Professional door has SafeLift spindles, always replace the complete assembly. The anti-drop latch is integral to the SafeLift spindle unit and cannot be transferred to a plain CD45 spindle. Fitting a standard spindle in place of a SafeLift assembly removes a safety feature and should not be done.
Lubricate new spindles after fitting. Apply a silicone or PTFE spray to the roller bearing and spindle shaft. This reduces wear and eliminates squeaking. Annual lubrication as part of routine maintenance significantly extends spindle service life.
