Common Garador Garage Door Faults and Fixes

What Are the Most Common Garador Garage Door Faults?

Garador garage doors develop a predictable set of faults as they age. Most are resolved with inexpensive replacement parts. This guide covers the most common faults across G3 canopy, MK3C, MK4 retractable and Garador sectional doors, with the cause and correct fix for each

Common fault diagnosis guide

Symptom Most likely cause Fix
Door very heavy to lift manually Broken or weakened spring Replace spring. Confirm G3, MK3C or MK4 type and door width before ordering.
Door drops or sags on one side Frayed or snapped C-type cable Replace both cables. Inspect cones for wear. Confirm G3 C-type or MK3C pattern before ordering.
Grinding or scraping when door moves Worn or seized roller spindles Replace C-type roller spindle assemblies. Check track alignment. Lubricate with silicone spray after fitting.
Door does not latch when closed Worn canopy latch assembly or keeper; disconnected lock rod cable Inspect latch and keeper. Check lock rod cable connection at both the lock body and the latch bracket.
Handle turns but door will not lock Broken cam in lock body; disconnected lock rod Replace lock mechanism body. Reconnect or replace lock rod cable.
Remote stops working Flat battery; lost pairing; faulty receiver Replace battery first. If still not working, reprogram the remote to the motor. If reprogramming fails, check the motor receiver.
Anti-drop spindle triggered, door jammed Cable snapped, triggering the safety latch Replace the snapped cable. Then replace the anti-drop spindle assembly. Reset the latch only after fitting new cable.
Motor runs but door does not move Disconnected towing arm; drive belt or chain failure Check towing arm connection to door. Inspect drive belt or chain for failure or slipping.
Sectional door panel squeaks or binds Worn panel rollers or hinges Lubricate rollers and hinges. If worn, replace the affected roller. Sectional door rollers are available in 40mm and 50mm diameters.
Door stiff in cold weather Seized spindles or insufficient lubrication Lubricate all moving parts. Replace any spindle that remains stiff after lubrication.

Annual maintenance to prevent common faults

  • Lubricate all C-type roller spindles, the spring shaft bearing points and the lock mechanism with a silicone or PTFE-based spray. Avoid WD-40 which dries quickly and attracts dirt.
  • Inspect cables along their full length for fraying, kinking or wear at the cone end and the bottom bracket end.
  • Test the door balance: open to halfway, release, confirm the door stays stationary. A rising door has excess spring tension; a dropping door has insufficient tension.
  • Operate the lock handle and confirm that the top latches engage and disengage cleanly on both sides of the door.
  • Test the remote from the furthest practical distance. Reduced range can indicate a battery approaching end of life.
  • Check all track bracket and spring shaft bearing plate fixings are secure.
Catch faults early. A weakening Garador spring puts extra load on the cables and cones as the door becomes harder to lift. A fraying cable puts strain on the opposite cable once it snaps. Most Garador faults develop over weeks or months and are far cheaper to fix at an early stage than after a complete failure.
