Garador Garage Door Spring Replacement

How Do I Replace a Garador Garage Door Spring?

A broken Garador spring is the most common reason a door becomes too heavy to lift or inoperable. The replacement spring must match the original specification for your door type and width. This guide covers how to identify the correct Garador spring and the replacement process for G3 canopy, MK3C and MK4 retractable doors

Garador spring types by door model

Door type Spring type How to identify the correct spring
G3 canopy (2002 onwards) Single overhead torsion spring on shaft. G3 spring assembly includes the spring, spring shaft and end brackets. Select by door width. Standard widths: 7ft (2134mm), 7.5ft (2286mm), 8ft (2438mm). Non-standard widths available on request.
MK3C canopy (pre-2002) Single overhead spring, different specification from G3. Confirm by door width and original spring dimensions. MK3C springs differ in coil count and wire diameter from G3 equivalents.
MK4 retractable F-type spring anchored to the link arm brackets either side of the door. Confirm MK4 F-type by the retractable gear arrangement and F-type cone profile. Springs are selected by door weight and width.
Garador sectional Overhead torsion spring on shaft above door. Selected by door weight and height. Sectional door torsion springs require precise specification. Contact Northwest Garage Door Spares with door height, width and panel weight for confirmation.
Belgravia double-width canopy Double spring arrangement. PN31/PN59 cable arrangement. Confirm by the wider door opening and paired cable system. Double-width springs are available separately.

Replacing a Garador G3 canopy door spring

  1. Open the door fully and secure it in the open position by clamping the track below the roller spindle. This releases tension from the spring.
  2. Photograph the spring shaft arrangement on both sides before removing anything.
  3. The G3 spring sits on a shaft held at each end by bearing plates fixed to the door frame. Note the spring hook position and the number of turns of tension before releasing.
  4. Release spring tension by unwinding the spring adjuster or unhooking the spring end from the bearing plate anchor. Work carefully and in small steps.
  5. Slide the old spring off the shaft and fit the replacement in the same position and orientation.
  6. Re-tension the spring to the same number of turns as the original. Lower the door and test the balance at the halfway point.
Garador G3 and MK3C canopy springs are under torsional tension on the shaft. Release tension in small, controlled steps. Never release a fully wound spring in a single action. If you are not confident working with torsion spring systems, have the spring replaced by a qualified engineer.
Balance test after every spring replacement. Open the door to the halfway position and release it. A correctly tensioned door stays stationary. If it rises, reduce spring tension. If it drops, the spring is under-tensioned or under-specified for the door weight.
