Henderson Cones and Cables Replacement

How Do I Replace Henderson Cones and Cables?
Frayed or snapped Henderson cables are a very common fault and one of the most cost-effective repairs on these doors. The correct cable type depends on whether you have a Pre-Premier, Premier, Merlin, Doric or Dolphin door. This guide covers how to identify and replace cables and cones on all Henderson canopy door types
Cable and cone types by Henderson model
| Model | Cable end type | Cone/bobbin type |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-Premier | Loop end (simple wire loop at bottom) | Round bobbin on spring shaft |
| Premier | Stud end (metal stud crimped into cable) | Tapered cone on spring shaft. Anti-drop versions have a safety latch integrated into the spindle bracket. |
| Merlin / Doric | Loop end | Round bobbin similar to Pre-Premier |
| Dolphin | Side spring cables (different system) | Not applicable. Dolphin uses side springs rather than an overhead cable drum system. |
Replacing Premier canopy door cables and cones
- Open the door fully and clamp it securely in the open position on the track. This removes spring tension from the cables.
- Photograph the cable routing and cone position on both sides before removing anything.
- At the bottom of the door, the cable end (stud end on Premier doors) slots into a bracket on the door bottom rail. Press the stud end out of its slot to release the cable.
- At the spring shaft, the cable wraps around the cone groove. Unwind the cable from the cone.
- If replacing the cone, unscrew or unclip the cone from the spring shaft, noting the position and orientation.
- Fit the new cone to the shaft in the same position. Thread the new cable through any guides, wrap the top end around the cone groove and route the cable down to the bottom bracket.
- Slot the stud end of the cable into the bottom bracket. Lower the door slowly, checking the cable sits correctly in the cone groove on both sides.
Always replace both cables at the same time. Henderson cables on the same door wear at the same rate. If one has frayed or snapped, the other is at a similar point in its service life. Replacing only the failed cable risks the second one failing shortly after. Complete cable and cone kits for all Henderson canopy models are available from Northwest Garage Door Spares.
Never release the spring shaft while the door is in the closed position. The spring is under tension when the door is closed. Always open the door fully and secure it before working on cables or cones to avoid the spring releasing suddenly.
