How Do I Replace Henderson Spindles and Rollers?
Worn Henderson roller spindles are a frequent cause of doors that bind, scrape or travel unevenly. Replacement spindles are available for all Henderson canopy door models and the replacement process is one of the simpler Henderson door repairs. This guide covers identification and replacement for Pre-Premier, Premier and anti-drop spindle types
Henderson roller spindle types
| Model | Spindle type | Key identification |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-Premier | Simple roller spindle with bracket | Plain spindle shaft with roller. No anti-drop mechanism. Bracket has retractable or canopy gear configuration. |
| Premier (early, no anti-drop) | Simple roller spindle with bracket | Similar to Pre-Premier but with Premier-pattern cable stops. No safety latch on spindle body. |
| Premier (later, with anti-drop) | Anti-drop spindle assembly | Visible safety latch mechanism on the spindle body that locks the door against the track if a cable snaps. Must be replaced as a complete assembly. |
| Ultra / retractable | Retractable-gear roller spindle | Spindle and bracket suited to retractable track configuration. Different bracket profile from canopy-type spindles. |
Signs that Henderson spindles need replacing
- Grinding or scraping noise when the door moves
- Door deviates from the track or jams at a specific point
- Roller visibly worn flat or seized (does not rotate when the door moves)
- Spindle shaft bent or corroded
- Anti-drop latch mechanism damaged or not engaging correctly
Replacing a Premier canopy door spindle
- Open the door fully and secure it in the open position on the track.
- The spindle assembly is mounted in the track bracket on each side of the door. Remove the retaining bolt or circlip securing the spindle shaft to the bracket.
- Slide the old spindle assembly out of the track and bracket.
- Fit the new spindle assembly into the bracket, ensuring the roller sits correctly in the track channel.
- Secure the shaft with the retaining bolt or circlip. Lower the door and test operation through the full travel range.
If your Premier door has anti-drop spindles, replace the complete assembly. The anti-drop spindle on later Henderson Premier doors includes a safety latch that prevents the door falling if a cable breaks. This latch is part of the spindle assembly and cannot be transferred to a plain spindle. Fitting a plain spindle in place of an anti-drop assembly removes a safety feature that was specified for the door.
Lubricate new spindles after fitting. Apply a silicone or PTFE-based spray to the roller bearing and spindle shaft after fitting. This reduces wear and keeps the door running quietly. Repeat annually as part of routine door maintenance.
