Henderson Garage Door Spring Replacement

How Do I Replace a Henderson Garage Door Spring?

A broken Henderson garage door spring is one of the most common faults on these doors. The replacement spring must match the original specification for your model. This guide covers spring identification and the replacement process for Pre-Premier, Premier, Dolphin and Ultra gear Henderson doors

Identifying the correct spring for your Henderson door

Model Spring type How to identify
Pre-Premier canopy Single overhead torsion spring on shaft Confirm door width. Pre-Premier springs are identified by coil length and diameter. Measure the broken spring or confirm by door width.
Premier canopy Single overhead torsion spring on shaft Confirm door width. Premier springs are available for standard single (7ft, 7.5ft, 8ft) and non-standard widths. Measure the door opening width.
Dolphin Side springs, colour-coded Yellow: small single doors. Grey: standard single and small double. Green: standard double-width doors. Match colour of original spring.
Ultra / Ultra 225 Spring with bolt adjuster at top The spring adjuster is a bolt screwed into the top of the coil. Some models use a hook adjuster. Confirm which type is fitted before ordering.
Merlin / Doric canopy Single overhead torsion spring on shaft Similar specification to Pre-Premier. Confirm door width and spring dimensions from existing spring.

Replacing a Premier canopy door overhead spring

  1. Open the door fully and secure it in the open position using a clamp or vice grip on the track below the roller spindle. This releases tension from the spring and cables.
  2. Note the spring orientation and cable routing before removing anything. Take a photograph of both sides of the door mechanism.
  3. The spring sits on a shaft running across the top of the door frame, held at each end by bearing plates or brackets. On Premier doors the spring is normally tensioned by a hook at one end engaging with a hole in the bracket.
  4. Release the spring tension by unhooking the spring adjuster from the bracket. On some models the adjuster bolt is wound out rather than unhooked.
  5. Slide the old spring off the shaft and fit the new spring in the same position and orientation.
  6. Re-hook or re-tension the spring adjuster. Lower the door slowly and check that the door balances correctly at the halfway point.

Replacing Dolphin side springs

Dolphin door side springs mount on brackets on the garage door frame either side of the door opening. To replace: open the door and secure it, then unhook the spring from its anchor bracket at the top and from the lower bracket attached to the door mechanism. Fit the new spring in the same position. Always replace both side springs at the same time even if only one has failed, to maintain even tension across the door.

Overhead torsion springs store significant energy and must be handled with care. Always fully open and secure the door before releasing or adjusting any spring component. If you are not confident working with spring systems, have the replacement carried out by a qualified engineer.
Check the door balance after fitting the new spring. Open the door to the halfway position and release it. A correctly tensioned door stays stationary. If it rises, the spring tension is too high. If it drops, the tension is too low or the spring is under-specified for the door weight.
