Hörmann Cones and Cables Replacement

How Do I Replace Hörmann Cones and Cables?

Frayed or snapped Hörmann cables cause the door to drop on one side or become inoperable. Replacing cables and cones is one of the more common Hörmann door repairs and can be completed with basic tools. This guide covers how to identify the correct parts and the replacement process for canopy and retractable doors

Understanding the cable and cone system

On canopy and retractable Hörmann doors, the spring's energy is transferred to the door through a system of cones (also called spring drums or cable drums) and lift cables. The cone sits on the spring shaft and the cable wraps around its groove. As the spring unwinds, it turns the cone, winding the cable and lifting the door. When a cable frays or snaps, the door is no longer supported on that side and drops.

Identifying the correct cable

Door type Cable specification to check
Canopy (G3 / C-type, 2002 onwards) 3mm diameter stainless or galvanised cable. Length varies by door height. Measure the existing cable or confirm by door height.
Retractable (single width, 2002 onwards) Cables are integrated into the spring cluster assembly on retractable doors. Order the complete spring cluster rather than the cable separately.
Older canopy (pre-2002) Confirm cable diameter and length from existing cable. Contact Northwest Garage Door Spares with your door model for confirmation.

Replacing canopy door cables and cones

  1. Open the door fully and secure it in the open position with a clamp or vice grip on the track. This releases the spring tension from the cables.
  2. Note how the cable is routed before removing anything. Take a photo of both sides of the door mechanism before starting.
  3. At the bottom of the door, the cable terminates in a loop hooked onto a bracket. Unhook the cable end from the bracket.
  4. At the cone end, the cable is either knotted through a hole in the cone or clamped. Remove the cable from the cone.
  5. Fit the new cable to the cone first, then route it along the side of the door and hook the bottom end onto the bracket.
  6. Lower the door slowly, allowing the spring to tension the cable as the door closes. Check that the cable sits correctly in the cone groove on both sides.
Always replace both cables at the same time. Cables on the same door wear at the same rate. If one cable has frayed or snapped, the other is at a similar point in its service life. Replacing only the failed cable risks the second failing shortly after and leaving the door inoperable again.
Never attempt to work on the spring shaft while the spring is under tension. Always fully open the door and secure it before disconnecting any cables. The spring shaft on a canopy door stores significant rotational energy. If you are uncertain about releasing spring tension safely, contact a qualified engineer.
