Hörmann Garage Door Part Identification Guide

Which Hörmann Garage Door Part Do I Need?
Hörmann garage doors use model-specific parts. Using the wrong spring, cable or remote can cause damage or leave the door inoperable. This guide walks through how to identify your door type, find your model reference and match it to the correct replacement part
Step 1: Identify your door type
Hörmann manufacture several distinct garage door types, and the replacement parts for each are not interchangeable. The first step is identifying which type you have.
Canopy door
The door swings up and outward, with the top section projecting out from the opening as a canopy when open. Most common on older UK properties. Uses a single overhead spring, side tension bars, cones, cables and roller spindles. The spring is mounted horizontally across the top of the door opening on a shaft.
Retractable door
The door lifts entirely inside the garage when open, with no canopy overhang. Uses a pair of side springs or a single overhead torsion spring, cones, cables and roller spindles on a track system. Requires more garage depth than a canopy door.
Sectional door
The door is made of horizontal panels that fold and travel up the side tracks and across the ceiling. Uses torsion springs, rollers, hinges, brackets and cables. Hörmann sectional doors use specific part numbers for each panel size and weight.
Step 2: Find your model number
Hörmann mark their doors and motor units with model numbers that determine which parts are compatible. Where to look:
| Component | Where to find the model number |
|---|---|
| Up-and-over door (canopy or retractable) | Label on the inside face of the door panel, usually top left corner or along the side edge |
| Sectional door | Label on the inside of the bottom panel or on the track bracket |
| Motor unit (SupraMatic, ProMatic etc.) | Label on the motor head casing, usually underneath or on the side facing into the garage |
| Remote control handset | Printed on the back of the handset or inside the battery compartment |
| Spring | Colour of the spring end caps indicates the spring specification. Hörmann use a colour-coded system for spring identification |
Step 3: Match the part to the model
Once you have the door type and model reference, use the table below to identify the part category you need:
| Symptom | Likely part needed | Door types |
|---|---|---|
| Door heavy to lift or drops when released | Spring (broken or weakened) | All types |
| Door drops on one side when opening | Cable (frayed or snapped) or cone | Canopy, retractable |
| Door binds or scrapes on one side | Roller spindle or bracket | All types |
| Remote no longer operates the motor | Remote handset or receiver | Motorised doors |
| Handle turns but door does not lock | Lock mechanism, latch or cam | All types |
| Door does not latch when closed | Latch assembly or keeper | Canopy, retractable |
| Squealing or grinding when operating | Roller spindles or hinge | Sectional |

Are Hörmann parts the same across different door models?
No. Hörmann use model-specific parts for springs, cables, cones and roller spindles. The same door type (canopy, retractable or sectional) from different production periods may use different specifications. Always check the model reference on your door before ordering a replacement part.
Can I use aftermarket parts on a Hörmann door?
Pattern (aftermarket) parts are available for many Hörmann components and are considerably cheaper than genuine parts. They are appropriate for springs, cables and mechanical components where the specification can be matched. For remotes and motor electronics, genuine Hörmann BiSecur components are recommended as aftermarket remotes may not be compatible with the BiSecur encryption system.
How do I know if my Hörmann door is a canopy or retractable?
Open the door fully. If the top section projects out from the opening as a horizontal canopy, it is a canopy door. If the entire door travels inside the garage and lies parallel to the ceiling, it is a retractable door. Canopy doors have a single overhead spring; retractable doors have side springs or a torsion spring system.
Where can I find the Hörmann model number on my door?
For up-and-over doors, look for a label on the inside face of the door panel, usually in the top left corner or along the side edge. For sectional doors, check the inside of the bottom panel or the track bracket. For motor units, the model label is on the motor head casing, typically underneath or on the side facing into the garage.
