How Do I Replace Hörmann Spindles and Rollers?
Worn or seized roller spindles are a frequent cause of Hörmann doors that bind, scrape or travel unevenly. Replacement spindles are available for all Hörmann door types and the work is straightforward for a competent DIY person. This guide covers how to identify the correct spindle and complete the replacement
Types of Hörmann roller spindle
| Door type | Spindle type | Key dimensions to match |
|---|---|---|
| Canopy (G3 / C-type, 2002 onwards) | C-type roller spindle. The roller runs in the side track channel. | Spindle length (85mm, 94mm or 96mm depending on version). Confirm by measuring the existing spindle shaft. |
| Retractable (2002 onwards) | Retractable-type spindle with bracket. Often supplied as an anti-drop spindle assembly with integrated safety latch. | Spindle length and bracket type. Check whether your door has an anti-drop safety feature: if so, the anti-drop spindle assembly must be replaced as a unit. |
| Sectional door | Side rollers (running in the vertical and horizontal track) and top/bottom rollers on each panel. | Roller diameter (40mm or 50mm) and stem length. Hörmann sectional rollers must match the track gauge. |
Signs that roller spindles need replacing
- Scraping or grinding noise when operating the door
- Door deviates from the track or becomes difficult to guide
- Visible wear or flattening of the roller surface
- Roller seized (does not rotate when the door moves)
- Spindle shaft visibly bent or corroded
Replacing canopy door roller spindles
- Open the door fully and secure it in the open position.
- The roller spindle assembly sits in the side track bracket. Remove the bolt or clip securing the spindle shaft to the bracket.
- Slide the old spindle assembly out of the track and bracket.
- Fit the new spindle assembly into the bracket, ensuring the roller sits correctly in the track channel.
- Secure the spindle shaft with the retaining bolt or clip. Lower the door and test operation.
If your door has an anti-drop safety spindle, replace the complete assembly. Hörmann anti-drop spindles include a safety latch that prevents the door from falling if a cable breaks. This latch is integrated into the spindle assembly. Fitting a standard roller spindle in place of an anti-drop assembly removes a safety feature and should not be done.
