How Do I Replace a Hörmann Garage Door Lock or Handle?
A broken lock, worn handle or faulty latch assembly compromises both the security and usability of your Hörmann door. Most Hörmann lock components are straightforward to replace without specialist tools. This guide covers the main lock and handle components and how to replace them
Hörmann lock system components
Hörmann up-and-over doors use a central locking system consisting of several connected components. Understanding which component has failed determines which part to order.
| Component | Function | Symptom when failed |
|---|---|---|
| T-handle or external handle | Provides the external grip to turn the lock mechanism | Handle loose, broken or missing |
| Lock mechanism body | Central cam assembly that moves the lock rods when the handle is turned | Handle turns but door does not lock or unlock |
| Eurolock barrel | The keyed cylinder that allows the door to be locked from the outside | Key no longer turns, barrel stiff or damaged |
| Lock rods (latch cables) | Cables or rods running from the central mechanism to the latches at the top or bottom of the door | Door does not latch on one or both sides |
| Latch assembly (keeper) | The catch at the top or bottom of the door that engages with the door frame | Door does not hold closed or rattles |
| Internal handle | Internal lever or pull handle used to release the latch from inside | Difficult to open from inside |
Replacing a T-handle or external handle
The T-handle is secured from the inside of the door, usually with two or four bolts passing through the door skin. To replace: open the door or access the inside face, remove the fixing bolts, withdraw the handle assembly from the outside and fit the new handle in reverse order. The spindle length (the shaft connecting the handle to the lock body) must match the thickness of the door skin. Common spindle lengths for Hörmann doors are 69mm, 75mm and 94mm. Check the length of your existing spindle before ordering.
Replacing a eurolock barrel
The eurolock barrel is retained by a grub screw or retaining clip accessible from the inside of the door. Remove the retaining screw or clip, withdraw the old barrel with the key inserted and turned to the release position, and insert the new barrel in the same orientation. The new barrel will come with its own set of keys. If your door frame uses a key-alike system with other locks on the property, a locksmith can cut a replacement barrel to match your existing key profile.
